Bosch and Daimler show driverless parking in real traffic

World premiere at the Mercedes-Benz Museum's car park
- Automated park service via smartphone starts as a pilot project in the Mercedes-Benz Museum's car park.
- Bosch supplies infrastructure, vehicle technology comes from Daimler.

Stuttgart - Self parking was yesterday. Together, Bosch and Daimler have implemented the Automated Valet Parking at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. By means of a smartphone command, cars now drive without a driver into the assigned parking space, without the driver still needing to monitor the maneuver. Automated valet parking is an important milestone on the road to autonomous driving. The pilot solution in the Mercedes-Benz Museum's parking garage is the world's first infrastructure-assisted solution for an automated ancillary and parking service in real mixing. Guests at the Museumsparkhaus can experience the comfortable service from the beginning of 2018 and save time for parking.


"We approach the autonomous driving faster than many suspect. The driverless parking in the museum shows impressively how far the technology is already, "said Dr. Michael Hafner, Head of Automated Driving and Active Safety in Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. "Thanks to the use of intelligent parking garage infrastructure and its networking with vehicles, we have succeeded in realizing the parking lot easier than planned," said Gerhard Steiger, Chairman of the Bosch Chassis Systems Control division.


As from Ghost Hand: Automated to the parking lot and back
With the smartphone anyone can book a car via app. At the start of the journey, the vehicle comes automatically into the pick-up area. The return is just as convenient by the customer hitting the vehicle in the drop-off area of ​​the car park and returning it via a smartphone app again. Captured by the intelligent system of the car park, the car is started and led to an assigned parking lot.

The driver-free parking is made possible by means of an intelligent parking garage infrastructure from Bosch in conjunction with the vehicle technology of Mercedes-Benz. The installed sensors in the parking garage monitor the corridor and its surroundings and control the vehicle. The technology in the car reliably converts the commands from the Parkaus infrastructure into driving maneuvers and stops the vehicle on time. The sensors for the parking garage infrastructure and communication technology come from Bosch. Daimler provides the private museum garage and pilot vehicles, defines the interface between infrastructure and vehicle together with Bosch and adapts the sensors and software in the vehicles accordingly.

World-wide first operating license for driverless parking
The premiere is followed by an intensive test and commissioning phase. The project was accompanied by local authorities - the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart and the Ministry of Transport, as well as by experts from TÜV Rheinland, with the aim of evaluating the safe operation of vehicle and car park technology. Before the start of 2018, which is the world's first application, the driverless customer operation in the Mercedes-Benz Museum's own car park, the final approval by the regulatory authority is still required. This provides the basic conditions, so the automated valet parking will be available to everyone at the Mercedes-Benz Museum's parking garage from the beginning of 2018 onwards. In this way, Bosch and Mercedes-Benz gather experience on how users interact with automated valet parking. Stockpile buildings can be retrofitted with the infrastructure technology. For the car park operator, parking is a more efficient use of parking space: up to 20 percent more vehicles fit into the same area.
